The best time of year to visit San Antonio, Texas

Dubbed the ‘Alamo City,’ the ‘River City,’ and ‘Military City’ with good reason, San Antonio is home to some truly iconic destinations and a few hidden gems. When planning a trip to visit San Antonio, Texas a few common attractions are sure to show up on the to-do list: The Alamo, the Riverwalk, and perhaps a trip to the blossoming Pearl district.

But once those boxes have been checked, what’s next? And when is the best time to arrive to see the city of many names at its best? We have all the deets on when to go to San Antonio for festivals, food, the outdoors, and more.

Editor’s note: during COVID-19 there may be additional travel restrictions. Check the latest guidance in Texas before planning a trip, and always follow local government health advice. All events are subject to change.

Quick – what is the first word you think of when you hear “San Antonio, Texas?” If you answered “hot,” you are not alone! By the time May rolls around, daily highs typically average between 85-95° and humidity levels stay above 60%. Despite this extreme heat, many locals continue to invite friends and family to visit each summer because that is when San Antonio’s true colors can be seen.

The best way to see those colors firsthand? Firework displays. All summer long.

Come Memorial Day, visitors will quickly learn that ‘Military City’ is not just a nickname, but part of the local culture. One out of every eight San Antonio residents is directly connected to the military in some way, whether through retirement, active duty, or civilian work. There is a sense of pride in the community thanks to those relationships, and that pride can clearly be seen – and heard – in the sky throughout the summer.

San Antonians truly love their fireworks, despite what the local laws might have to say for it. On July 4th, the most extravagant (legal) displays can be found at Woodlawn Lake, but rest assured that explosions can be seen and heard from almost any location come sundown.

Escape the heat with a long river float on the Comal River in nearby New Braunfels, take a dip on the beaches of Medina Lake, or bring the whole family to San Pedro Springs.

Fans of amusement parks will feel extra-comfortable with a visit to San Antonio – it’s home to both SeaWorld and the Six Flags staple ‘Fiesta Texas. Both equipped with state-of-the-art wave pools and ever-growing water attractions, that hot summer sun no longer seems so intimidating.
